For this year’s unlucky music fans who missed out on Coachella, several bands from the sold out festival provided consolation by playing a few select dates on the west coast. One other practical reason for this was the multiple weekend performances at Indio. Several of these bands decided to take advantage of their downtime rather than lounging around in the desert.

One of them was British pop/ska band Madness. They have been active in recent years since breaking up in 1988 (they would eventually reunite several years after), but it was a rare appearance for them at Club Nokia that brought out Los Angeles’ second wave skankers in their finest black and white attire. If anyone in the room was skeptical or had “wandered into the wrong part of the casino”, Madness flared from a giant light display on stage.

The Camden Town chart toppers began their set by igniting the all ages two tone crowd with a staple, Prince Buster’s cover of “One Step Beyond”. Madness have a knack for performing and recording other musicians’ songs live and on record. They’ve even previously acted as a professional cover band for their 25th anniversary playing several low-key shows as The Dangermen which eventually led to a successful album. “I Chase The Devil aka Iron Shirt”, “It Must Be Love” and the chipper “Taller Than You Are” were among some of the borrowed songs bustling the crowd but it was original gems like “My Girl” (admittedly a song inspired by Elvis Costello’s Watching the Detectives), “Our House”, and “House of Fun” that captured all ears and hips at the downtown venue.

Numbers ranged from the exuberant “Bed and Breakfast Man” to the dark and mellow but still upbeat “Grey Day”. Most of the band’s original lineup was present. Mike Barson and Graham McPherson provided a good portion of energy on stage. Some highlights included Chris Foreman’s Run DMC inspired rap after “Forever Young”, several young ladies from the audience dancing up on stage for the encore of “Night Boat to Cairo”, and a positive sing-along exit with Monty Python’s semi-optimistic anthem “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”.

EastScene’s Katherine Tare had the chance to sit down and speak with Jordan Dreyer from La Dispute.

-How do you think your music has changed since your first release, Vancouver, in 2006?

We’ve been a band for a long time and I think that’s most important. It’s been a long journey, and on behalf of the band, I can say we’ve learned a lot. All the way form Vancouver in 2006, 6 years has passed, and we have definitely evolved as musicians.

-What do you enjoy most about touring? I’m sure it’s tough to be away from home for such a long time.

Jordan: Yeah it can be tricky and hard to balance, but I think the best part is traveling with friends. Getting to tour with talented bands and meeting amazing people. What’s not to love?! We always have a great time.

-Did Wildlife turn out the way you expected it to? Are you guys satisfied with the outcome?

Yeah, definitely. We’re a group of people that know pretty specifically what we want; we sat down to outline the record and we’re very happy with the way it turned out.

-So your album is divided into four monologues. Tell me about the structure and why you chose to write it that way:

The way that the record is set up is that it’s collection of stories divided by a set of monologues, letters from the author, that tell the story. so that’s pretty much it. We structured it that way to give it a flow and the four monologues give it a more personal aspect.

-Any crazy tour stories worth telling?

Nah, not really. We’re a really boring group of individuals actually. We tried to do karaoke last night, but failed miserably. Our merch guy was jamming out to “Hashpipe” by Weezer, which was pretty funny to watch. But that’s as crazy as we get.

-Do you have any particular influences that inspire your writing?

It’s hard not to be influenced by what goes on around you. There’s lots of talented musicians out there and I definitely have my favorites. Everything from comics, to television, to novels.

-What was your first show like?

Oh god, that was so long ago. Our first show was a place in Grand Rapids. It was mostly a bunch of friends and family. It was in some very small cramped art gallery. But I remember it being really fun

-If you could have any superpower, what would you want?

Oh man, I don’t know. Flying I guess. You should ask our base player, he’s a really big comic book guy.

-Would you rather tour with a band that doesn’t respect you or a band that you don’t respect?

Ah holy cow, that’s a new one. Um, I think I’d rather tour with a band that doesn’t respect me.

-Would you rather sign 100 autographs or take 100 pictures?

Sign autographs, definitely. Either way, its weird, I feel weird taking pictures and I feel weird signing things. I don’t think I’m someone to take a picture with or sign stuff. It’s easier to sign things I guess, at least you have time for some conversation, rather than standing still for 15 seconds haha.

-After the Wildlife tour, what do you guys have planned?

We’re going to take some time off, and then we’re heading to Europe in June for a couple of weeks. We don’t have anything set for a new recording yet though.

-Any last words to your fans?

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
