JAZZFEST Part Deux: Eastscene’s Picks for Montreal Jazz Festival July 1,2 and 3

The rain is subsiding and Jazzfest is warming up.  Here’s our picks for the shows to see in the next three days.


Affrodizz: With lots of horns, funked-up bass lines, infectious percussion and a wonderfully big voice, this afrobeat outfit knows how keep a party going. Offering three free showings, there’s no way anyone should miss these festival veterans.  Wear your most sensible dancing shoes because it’s going to get crazy!

A Tribe-Called Red: Made up of two-time Canadian DMC Champion DJ Shub, DJ NDN, and DJ Bear Witness, A Tribe Called Red has been celebrated at home and abroad. Mixing traditional pow wow vocals and drumming with infectious hip-hop beats and the grimy bass of dub-step, these Polaris Prize nominees throw down something completely unique – “Nativestep.” They are guaranteed to get the dance floor rumbling.

She and Him, with opening act Camera Obscura: Zooey Deschanel (She) and M. Ward (Him) will be bringing their “golden oldies” vibe of sound to Montreal’s Jazz Fest following the release of their fourth album, Volume 3. Hustle down to Place des Arts for their charming pas-de-deux, and be sure to catch the opening by Scottish group Camera Obscura who’s touring hot on the tails of the release of their album, Desire Lines.
