The Flaming Lips threw a real change-up with ‘Embryonic’
Have you ever stepped into an album so far that it feels like you’ve ventured out of your living room and into a place or a time that you’ve never been to previously? I get like that sometimes. Music makes me feel like I’ve been to places and in certain scenarios that I’ve never seen with my own eyes. Most recently it’s been the new Flaming Lips album, Embryonic. I’ve never been to war, I’ve never been to Vietnam, but it certainly feels how a jungle war would feel–chaotic, confusing, and disjointed.
I’m not saying that in a bad way, it’s not the quality of music that makes you feel that way. It’s the album score that makes you feel all funny–disoriented even. If you’ve ever been to Canada’s national capital and had the luxury of visiting the Canadian War museum, then you know what feeling I’m talking about. It feels like you’re lost in the trenches and there’s no escape in site.
It’s a huge departure from the commercial success of Yoshimi, and it’s certainly a stark contrast to the Mystics album. It’s something you need experience, alone, in a dark room, as loud as you can handle. Just lay back and enjoy the ride because it’ll take you to places you’ve never been.
