CD reviews

l_35cd85ba27f14198897cb46c145434e3The first record of ShyforShy speaks for itself, So In Time, especially in today’s music society of what will grab the listeners ears and make them listen. This album has the guitar melodies and solos of a pop and classic rock, with a mixture of experimental vocals very similar to Circa Survive’s vocalist Anthony Green. This is an original combination, and has come out with a master piece.

Each of the eleven tracks on the album have a mind, heart and soul of its own. Burning in with the first track of the name “Fire”, an intro and echoing chorus of Ryan Martinez, that your ears and lips will fallow.

Also, the tracks “Save” and “Olivia” shows the more softer experimental side of the record, with the catchy choruses and lyrics to come along. Both tracks starting out in a slow heart-reaching manor, then as the chorus comes in, the beat comes in harder. Making you feel the passion in the track with ever note as Martinez sings his soul out, these are the songs that will make your dreams reach for more.

Throughout the rest of the record, each song has a unique quality. In the ninth track, “Angel”, Martinez puts his voice in high gear with a pitch higher than the rest of the record. One of the most intriguing points on this album I thought are the guitar solos and melodies to bring out the feel on the album, in such songs of “Decisions, Decisions” and “Make Believe”.

The production of “So In Time” was produced by Brandon Metcalf, the president of the indie label Destiny Worldwide that they recently signed with, which started recording at the beginning of 2009 and was released in September. In such short time, especially being their first record, I personally thought what they had come out with was brilliant. You have to listen to the album a few times for the melodic motions or unique catchy pitches to sink in, but in the end, you want to listen again. Other than that, I personally have no complaints on this album.

The band comes off as very hardworking, as they promoted themselves to get to where they are. I believe that this record will steal hearts of the ones who understand it, and as for the others, the next will await. In my opinion, if ShyforShy keeps it up, they have the talent and ability to create even better records as time goes on.

ShyforShy is:
Matt Ellis: Drums
Caleb Connaway: Lead guitar
Ryan Martinez: Vox/ Rhythm guitar
Sten Johansen: Bass Guitar

Produced by: Brandon Metcalf
Label: Destiny Records
Released Date: September 15, 2009

Final Score: 8.5/10

Rockland - Thanks for the support! :) And, I WILL write that review for yout CD once I find the time. I've been so busy! "/

Roya bitch? Perhaps, but these posts are allowed comments for EXACTLY the reason I posted my own "rant"-so we, the readers, can express our opinions, whether they be positive or negative. Like I said, I truly am not trying to bash whoever wrote this (whoever that may be, this is nothing personal!), I was just surprised by the lack of editing. Anyone with a 4th grade reading ability would notice the author's careless mistakes. And, I have already been generously provided with a writing postion for East Scene, and have written my first review which has received positive feedback from the Vice President. A good day to you as well.

I agree with Haley... not a bitch just being real!

Haley- you are a royal bitch. I would hope East Scene wouldn't even think of hiring such a stubborn prick like yourself, because I don't think you have a right to be so judgmental when you have had zero experience in this field. Plus, I believe they have Editors for the reasons you had your ignorant "ranting". Have a good day.

Rockland, that sounds great! I can't wait to give it listen!

Rockland, true. Those are some very good points. And, nice to meet you, guitarist for ShyForShy! I have yet to listen to the record, but I'm always up for new music, and would love to write a review for it! Once I'm done, should I send it to you via MySpace, or is their an email address I should send it to? And thanks for taking an interest to my ranting-haha.
  • Rockland
Send it to shyforshy@gmail.com Thanks a lot Haley!

Well... There is a simple answer to all of your problems. Start your own webzine! I'm sure with talent like yours you will be able to succeed! Might I add that this isn't spin magazine and although everything being written perfectly would be awesome, this is still just basically a blog and people are much more forgiving. I am not a writer by any means by the way, I am the guitar player for ShyForSHy. Have you listened to the record yet? We would love it if maybe you could write us a review On iTUNES. Or just write anything you want about us and send it to us and if we like it maybe we can use it for something and give you credit!

Rockland, you actually can't see any of my work. I have only been published in my school newspaper-and it is this fact that angers me. Why is it that I, a lowly high school student, have far better writing skills than a writer for a music website? I truly am not trying to trash whoever wrote this, I'm just in shock that such work would be published. I mean, it looks as if this piece wasn't even edited. My school newspaper puts out better reviews than this, and our staff is not even composed of professionals. I just find that this review is poorly written, and it makes me sad that this kind of a writer can get a job and someone such as myself who actually has a true passion for writing, can't.
  • Rockland
That was roooouuuugggghhh Haley! Where can we see some of your work?
  • Haley
Honestly, this "review" is a disgrace to music journalism (and writing in general) everywhere. As an aspiring music journalist myself, I find it disgusting that this could even be published on a website. There are several spelling mistakes ("fallow," "manor," etc.), the grammar is BEYOND awful, and a majority of the sentences actually make no sense whatsoever (for example: "The first record of ShyforShy speaks for itself, So In Time, especially in today’s music society of what will grab the listeners ears and make them listen." and that was only the first sentence!) This was painful to read, not just as a reader, but as a writer and lover of music. East Scene-try to be a little more picky when choosing your staff writers. Please and thank you. And by the way, if you ever need someone who can actually formulate a sentence, please contact me at haleybrooket@Yahoo.com
