Featured, Interviews

Exploding onto the Los Angeles music scene in 2004, After Midnight Project have attracted thousands of new fans and garnered critical acclaim for their unrelenting live shows, intense viral campaigns and continued support from rock radio stations nationwide. After 4 years of nonstop touring and continually building their fan base both online and in person, the band signed with Universal Motown in 2008 and headed into the studio with renowned producer John Feldman (Atreyu, The Used) to record what would become their debut album, Let’s Build Something to Break. With the album slated to hit stores July 14th and their breakaway smash hit single “Take Me Home” headed for the airwaves June 23rd, After Midnight Project are ready to make 2009 a year you will never forget! EastScene had a chance to catch up with After Midnight Project. If you haven’t heard these guys make sure you check them out and pick up their album on iTunes.

ES: When and where did the band first form?

AMP: We formed in 2003 in Los Angeles California. Me and Dan met on Craigslist haha

ES: How would you describe your music?

AMP: I guess are classified as Alternative. I think it goes deeper. We have lots of layers and influences. We have really heavy parts really ambient electronic moments and super huge Rock Ballads. If Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters and Postal Service got burned in a fire the ashes would be AMP.

ES: What makes your music different from other bands of today?

AMP: I wouldn’t say we reinvented the wheel. I just think we are really good at what we do.. haha hope that doesn’t sound cocky. Our live show is pretty solid. We take pride in sounding good live

ES: What inspires you as artists?

AMP: Every day I am inspired by something new. I’m a sucker for love so tend to write about relationships. lately I have been inspired by seeing the world on tour. The lonely nights away from the people I love have inspired some really cool songs

ES: If you weren’t in a band, where would you be?

AMP: Wow I might be a hockey player. The guitar stole me away from hockey.

ES: Who’s your favorite band/artist to tour with?

AMP: I would love to tour with muse, Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance

ES: Best city to tour in?

AMP: That’s tough. On tour we don’t really get to see the city it’s kind of in and out. The Mid west has been showing us a lot of love!

ES: How would you describe your live show?

AMP: It’s like getting beat over the head with a bat but then having a super beautiful lady pick you up kiss you and make you feel ALL better!

ES: Explain your worst tour experience.

AMP: We opened for Trash Talk and the crowd literally told us if we didn’t get off the stage they would kill us. We didn’t get off :)

ES: How did it feel to play this year’s Vans Warped Tour?

AMP: It was an honor and such a great experience. We made so many new fans and met some really cool bands. Probably one of the best summers of my life!

ES: What are the differences between 2007’s The Becoming and this year’s Let’s Build Something to Break?

AMP: Its funny someone said to me the other day you sound like a radio band now. I was like I did nothing different on this album except actually get the sounds I was trying to get on the “becoming”. Having a budget just opened up doors for more opportunities. We didn’t change our sound. I feel like we have evolved.

ES: What was it like working with producing genius John Feldmann?

AMP: Well you said it…Genius. He really let us do what we wanted to do on this album. There was a mutual respect which led to an amazing outcome. He would let us do our thing and then come in say.. That sucks…that’s cool… What were you thinking!.. etc. When you are working with someone you trust it makes the process beautiful and smooth.

ES: Who’s the weirdest member of the band?

AMP: Wow everyone is completely insane.
Spencer is the man with a thousand voices. He makes weird noises all day long.
T.J. is part cave man, a quarter cup of coffee and a quarter green monster
Danny Listens to about 15 hours of music everyday!
Christian is like zen master Yoga zepplin listening grunge hippie
I’m just weird dude. I still can’t figure me out

ES: Who’s the ladies man?

AMP: hahahahahaha Id say we all are in our own ways

ES: Do you think you would all still be friends if the band had never existed?

AMP: Maybe not we are all very very different. The music is the glue that keeps us together

ES: Any special messages for your fans?

AMP: Thank you thank you thank. Through all the BS in this industry that has almost brought us to the ground. You have always been there to keep inspiring us and reassure us that we are in this for the right reason.
