The Maine – Interview
Despite the pouring rain, EastScene was able to have a quick chat with The Maine guitarist, Kennedy Brock, and drummer, Pat Kirch, at the Montreal Warped Tour stop.
EASTSCENE: This is the first time doing the whole tour for you, how is it so far?
KENNEDY: It’s great!!
PAT: It’s awesome! It’s kind of crazy.
KENNEDY: It’s been really hard, but probably the best tour we’ve been on.
ES: You guys were on the Punk Goes Crunk compilation, and you covered Akon’s “I Wanna Love You”. Did you guys chose that?
PAT: Yeah, we chose it!
ES: Why Akon?
PAT: It was popular at the time, it was a while ago though, like two years, and yeah we just decided to do it.
ES: You did your first video for “Everything I Ask For”. what was that like?
KENNEDY: That was crazy. It was obviously the first time we’ve ever shot a video. So it was amazing to see all these people working on set for us and you never see any of that, it was awesome.
ES: Was there any pressure on you guys to perform better because you knew you were being filmed?
PAT: We kind of just had fun with it.
KENNEDY: There wasn’t any pressure to sound good, so we just kind of played with it.
ES: A lot of bands have other artists do guest spots on their albums, is there anyone you guys would like to guest spot on yours?
PAT: We love to just have friends come sing on our record and stuff, so we just like having our friends come in.
KENNEDY: Yeah, on our last record, we had all of our friends come in and do group vocals, so it’s kind of like our own personal touch on it.
ES: How has your life changed since being in this band, as it happened fast.
PAT: I’ve been in a band before, everything just happens so fast, and it all changes. Nothing really changes except that we’re on tour all the time. And we love it! We don’t have to be at home or in school, so we love it.
ES: What’s the most rewarding thing for you guys in this band?
KENNEDY: Seeing kids come out and seeing us play.
ES: Because everything happened so fast for you guys, you literally have just skyrocketed these past two years. Was that surreal for you guys?
KENNEDY: Definitely, everything has happened really fast. Every time we turn around, something new is happening. Our whole crew is not used to any of it.
PAT: To me, it hasn’t really happened that fast, I mean being in previous bands, it all meshes into one. It just feels like it’s been a long road.
ES: Is it easy for you guys to find inspiration to write new stuff?
KENNEDY: Yeah, John (O’Callaghan) writes most of the music and I feel like either way, he takes it not necessarily from his experiences, he sees it from other people to, so he takes from that. So whether we’re on the road or at home, there’s always people to observe.
ES: Is there any songs that you guys will never get sick of playing? No matter how old
KENNEDY: We’ve been playing “The Way We Talk” for about two years now..
ES: And to top it off, what’s your favorite thing about being on Warped Tour?
KENNEDY: Getting to be in the crowd for all my friends’ bands!
