SAOSIN – Interview
EastScene was able to catch up with Saosin frontman, Cove Reber, and bassist, Chris Sorenson, during the Montreal Warped Tour. They discussed everything from the new album, to school, while looking out at the gloomy, gray clouds that were ready to burst.
EASTSCENE: The new album, In Search For Solid Ground, is done.. Was it a relief to get it done?
CHRIS: Yeah, and an they’re going to be an even bigger relief when it’s finally out.
ES: Do you find you have a lot of pressure to release this one in comparison to the last one?
CHRIS: No, not anymore. Actually, I don’t think we’ve ever felt that way, ever. It’s kind of weird, we always just do whatever we gotta do.
ES: Cove, you joined the band at just 19. Was is easy for you to grow as an adult being in this band?
COVE: It actually went pretty fast. It was pretty hard, until we put out our first record. Once we put out the first record, it was much more original stuff, it wasn’t demos. It just became a lot easier. It was freedom, it just felt like freedom to put out the first one. I never really felt too pressured, but there was a certain amount of stress that I was feeling up until the record came out.
ES: Two of you guys actually went to school onine with Berklee College Of Music, I actually just graduated from there..
CHRIS: Oh cool!
ES: Was it important for you to do school on the road?
CHRIS: It worked out really well actually.
ES: What kind of courses did you take?
CHRIS: I took… Music Theory 1 & 2, Justin did like jazz guitar and the same Music Theory classes as me. It was pretty cool, I didn’t know of any other bands who tried it, so it was cool.
ES: Yeah, and it’s easy to do on the road too.
CHRIS: Yeah, well, sometimes. Like, one time, we were in the UK and we had assigments to hand in and it was hard to get those ones in on time.
ES: What would you guys pursue career wise, if it wasn’t for the band?
CHRIS: Cooking chicken.
COVE: I don’t like thinking about that! You know, the band has been my life for 5 years, it’s been Chris’ life for 8 now? Yeah, 8. It’s just what we do, it’s what we love to do. Up until when I joined, I had no idea what I was going to do, but I’e been doing it for so long now, it’s routine now.
CHRIS: I think we both would still do something music related.
ES: You guys played in Australia, and Signapore. What was it like seeing fans there singing along/
CHRIS: You know, I thought they lived in grass huts and we get there and Signapore has more fans then we have ever seen. It’s weird to go places that you would never think you would end up going and people be there.
ES: Were there any places that were a surprise to you guys?
CHRIS: Yeah, Jakarta, Indonesia. I’ve never even heard of it.
ES: Did you have a big turn out there?
CHRIS: Yeah, one of our biggest shows ever.
COVE: Our biggest headlining show ever.
ES: The other morning, you guys played at like 10AM. Were the kids into it that early in the morning?
CHRIS: Surprisingly, they were pretty good. They were good sports. You have to give them some credit for showing up. You know, this is our job and we were barely awake at 9:15 that morning.
COVE: That day was crazy! Because the tickets said the shows started at 11AM, but they actually started at 10AM. I think it was one of the earliest Warped Tour shows ever.
ES: You guys update your Twitter everyday with show times and what not, how important is networking with sites like that for you guys?
COVE: Pretty important. I kind of botched it one day, I had a few people come up to me and say, “You didn’t Twitter your set time today! ” I think the people who follow it religiously are really just the die hard fans who check it everyday. And when they know I’m doing it, they’re going to check it even more. I think it’s pretty important, you know our band started online, so the more online stuff that we do, I think it’s going to reach out.
ES: Do you think it’s harder for bands to come out now, then it was when you guys first started?
CHRIS: The door is definitely open, but the hallway is not as long. So it’s just about maintaining that longevity.
ES: Where do you guys hope that this band will be in the next… year?
CHRIS: Warped Tour on the Sheer Girls stage, following Paramore. Haha, no, just continuing to make records.
ES: And one last question, what’s the best thing for you guys about being on Warped Tour?
COVE: Sandwiches.
CHRIS: Brunch on Sundays.
