Eastscene was able to catch up with David Strauchman, the lead singer of Every Avenue, at Bamboozle Left ‘09. As always, the band played an amazing set! If you haven’t had the opportunity to see these guys play yet, make sure to check them out on Warped Tour or at Bamboozle in a few weeks. They are about to start recording their new album, but until then, be sure to check out their first full length album released on Fearless records last year, “Shh…Just go with it.”

Eastscene: Is this your first time playing bamboozle Left?

Dave: This is our second time playing Bamboozle Left.

Eastscene: You guys just came off a UK Tour right?

Dave: Yes, We did a UK tour and we just did the Take Action Tour.

Eastscene: Where was your favorite place to play?

Dave: My favorite place on that tour…oh, man…We had a really good show in Colorado. I don’t know if it was my favorite, but it was a really memorable one.

Eastscene: Do you guys enjoy playing in Canada?

Dave: Yeah, I do! Actually I live 5 minutes away from Canada, it’s right on the border. When I was 19 we would all go there and get wasted! (laughs)

Eastscene: Nice, we hear that a lot! You guys are about to start work on your new album right?

Dave: Yep, we’re pretty excited about it. We’re doing it with a producer named Mitch Allan. He was the singer for SR-71 and now he writes and records so we’re really excited about that.

Eastscene: Do you think that, with this new album, Every Avenue will be moving in a different direction?

Dave: I feel like there are a lot of elements of the old album and new ones too. You know, we’re slowly moving progressively forward.

Eastscene: If someone hadn’t heard of your band before, how would you describe it in less than 2 sentences?

Dave: Less than two sentences? Hmm…Fun, energetic, pop songs that everyone can relate to! Yeah… (laughs)

Eastscene: That’s pretty good! You guys are doing Warped Tour again this year right?

Dave: Yeah, we’re doing the second half of Warped Tour. From orlando and on.

Eastscene: Oh ok, so you’re not doing the Toronto and Montreal dates because they’re pretty early this year…

Dave: Not this year then…We’re not doing the North-East ones, but we’re doing Vancouver and another one that I can’t remember…(thinks for a second) Alberta!! Could that be it? I could be wrong, I’m probably wrong. (laughs)

Eastscene: Nope, that’s probably right! From all the bands that you’ve toured with, who do you think you’ve learned the most from?

Dave: Oh man, I think that we probably learn from all the bands we tour with. I think that big ones that we’ve toured with, like All Time Low…all the bands we’ve toured with! The Audition, we just toured with Cute is What We Aim For. I think just watching other bands helps and they probably learn stuff from us too.

Eastscene: Were you fans of any of these bands before you got a chance to tour with them?

Dave: Oh yeah! It’s cool to tour with bands that we’re fans of.

Eastscene: Is there a band you would like to do a collaboration with sometime?

Dave: Possibly! I think…I don’t know…It’s kind of hard to do that right now, but getting people to come sing on our album would be cool or going to sing on other people’s albums. I would enjoy that.

Eastscene: How about a band that you haven’t toured with? Even if it was just a dream collaboration…

Dave: Yeah, oh man, I don’t know! I think we all like Third Eye Blind. I think that would be something fun. I really like Gavin Degraw, but I don’t know everyone else (band mates) agrees. I don’t know. It would be fun though and I think that different artists could put a different touch on things, depending on who you work with.

Eastscene: How do you think you band works as a team when it comes to writing new music?

Dave: This time we’re doing the album a bit differently. There are certain people in the band that write and then the other people come in and will try to write the songs first and then we can all put our own touch on it, so it’s different. We’ve written songs with the full band and we’ve written songs by ourselves too.

Eastscene: Who usually takes the lead with the lyrics?

Dave: There are 3 different people that write the lyrics, so if someone starts the song we take it from there or they give me the general idea and I’ll finish it or someone else will and we’ll work together if we’re struggling and stuff. It’s definitely a team effort for sure!

Eastscene: That’s cool. Have you guys chosen a name for the new album?

Dave: Not yet, it’s still in the works. We have some ideas, but we’re not too sure yet. Hopefully soon we can figure that shit out! (Laughs)

Eastscene: Do you have the majority of your songs ready to go?

Dave: Yeah, we have a bunch of demos. We’re still going to be doing a little more writing before we start hammering out the songs though. I’m excited!

Eastscene: Awesome, we’re looking forward to it! Thanks so much.

Dave: You’re welcome, definitely!
