On Monday, November 17, 2008, Colour Revolt graced Montreal once more with their humble presence. This show, which took place at Zoobizarre (located on Saint-Hubert and Beaubien), was quite different compared to their previous concert at Sala Rossa back in July. For one thing, the audience consisted of less than 20 individuals. This, along with perhaps the lack of space at this rather small and intimate venue, made the experience that much more agreeable.

The Darling DeMaes, a Montreal-based indie band, started the show with a short and sweet set. Quick and crunching acoustic guitar riffs along with sporadic use of a xylophone and upbeat drumming make The Darling DeMaes a band to watch closely. Furthermore, the lead singer (Erik) sang with such heartfelt conviction that it was impossible to ignore him, let alone his unique and quivering vocals.

Shortly after, Colour Revolt took stage. This was my fourth time seeing them, and every single time I see them, I am taken aback by how brilliant they are on stage and on album. Each member of Colour Revolt is a master of their own respective instrument, and together, in unison, they have created some of the most intricate and creative music I’ve heard in a while. Every note is calculated and precise. Perfectionists at best, they are experimental and intelligent, constantly thriving to push the limit to their musicianship. And in this aspect, they have succeeded. every. single. time.

If you have not heard about this band yet, you are in for a treat. Whether or not you’re a musician, you will learn to appreciate the depth of their lyrics and the layers of music they have developed in their songs. You will not regret it.
