EastScene had a chance to interview Ellis, the drummer of SHYforSHY. Check out the interview and learn some things about the band that you may not know.
ES: Tell me something interesting about yourself in one sentence?
SFS: Well, my hair color doesn’t match my eyebrows.
ES: Did any bands that you grew up listening to affect the genre of style you play today?
SFS: FOR SURE if it wasnt for records like: Copeland-Beneath the Medicine Tree, Emery-The Weaks End, Further Seems Forever-The Moon is Down. I probably wouldn’t even being playing drums…
you might look at those records and go… well the drums weren’t anything too crazy on the records.. but they were what I had in the cd player playing along to the most!
ES: How many bands have you been in?
SFS: Three.
ES: Is there any special meaning behind your band name?
SFS:Ryan says it’s from that 80′s song shy, shy, shy I think he made that up after he made the name.
ES: Who writes the songs, and what are they about?
SFS: Ryan writes pretty much all the songs and we all just throw our input musically on top of the ideas… they are about all kinds of things but you would have to ask him. He never tells me anything.
ES: What is your biggest influence on your songs subject?
SFS: Well drum wise… I try to listen to the song’s vocal dynamic or lead guitar dynamic and try to write something that just supports what everyone else is doing the best I can!
ES: Describe your show, visually and musically.
SFS: Our shows are a party.. We really want everyone to know we aren’t out there for only ourselves… But to make sure that everyone is having just as much fun as we are… The other night in Spokane we had a kid in the crowd with a prosthetic leg CROWD SURFING!! So we brought him up on stage and had him play some tambourine with us… it was RAD!!! Musically you can expect a tight sounding band throughout the whole set.. We are tired or hearing live bands that put on a great show but have a muddy live sound cause they focus more on the stage antics… we try to deliver a solid range of both!
ES: Describe what your band sounds like, and what bands do you resemble?
SFS: Thats been a really tough thing for us to put our finger on especially since everything we have recorded so far isn’t a super good representation of us… If I had to say something personally I would say we are a poppier sounding As Cities Burn or Anberlin.
ES: What are the biggest obstacles for your band?
SFS: I’d say our biggest obstacle has been the recording of our new/first record… and pinpointing where we want to record and who we want to engineer the record… Some things are set already and all the writing is done so be stoked for that.
ES: When are your next shows and who should attend and why?
SFS: We just got back from the littlest tour of all time, but we don’t have any shows booked for the near future just because we are trying to put the final touches on the writing for the new album… check our myspace to see if we do end up adding some new shows!
ES: Are you planning on releasing an EP or LP in the near future?
SFS: YES!! we are currently working on a full length album… Its being produced by our good friend Josh Head (Emery) So far its been great… Its a dream for us to work with a guy like Josh cause we have ALL loved the stuff emery has put out and really can put our faith in his ideas but at the same time hes a friend of all of ours so its super easy to work with him and work stuff out…
ES: That is it for now…we look forward to your new album.
SFS: Thanks.
