INTERVIEW WITH STEVE JULIANO OF I AM GHOST

ES:Can you state your name(s) and what you do in the band?

STEVE: This is Steve, and I sing in the band I Am Ghost.

ES: Was the writing/recording process different from the last album?

STEVE: On the last album, “Lovers’ Requiem”, we had just signed with Epitaph and I honestly did not know all the members too well. It was a huge change of life style for me as well to go from full time animator in Hollywood, a nine to five job, then to be thrust on tour 300 days a year and never home. We came into the last album not prepared at all, and our producer Elvis Baskette really helped us and taught us about song writing and just being a good band. I think we took all his teachings on this new album, and molded ourselves into what I have always wanted us to be. We had too many songs to choose from this time, which was a nice change of pace to be honest.

ES: Do you have any certain expectations for the new album?

STEVE: Well, like all bands, we want it to do well. But that can mean alot to other bands. For me, doing well means that everyone just loves it as much as I do. Some bands judge their success on how many cds they sold, which is important, don’t get me wrong, but for me I just want everyone to give this cd one listen. That’s all. Give us a chance and I think you will be pleasently suprised…

ES: Has the music scene from your first album to your second album
affected you in any way?

STEVE: The music scene is always fickle, and changes each month it seems. Bands come and go so fast now, and its just a never ending row of bands that have this huge buzz, come out swinging, then are gone by next year. I think we are just not that kind of band. Our music has always spoken for itself, and I honestly feel this band has some of the best musicians out there today. Everyone in my band can play like no other. We give you a sick show and i think thats what alot of bands are lacking now. Their cd might sound good, but see them live and your like, “Is this the same band?”

ES: Anything interesting, funny, surprising things happened while
recording the new album?

STEVE: Well, nothing too funny. We had our own apartment in MD for about two months recording, and it was pretty much “Lets get down to business” on this one. We would go out sometimes; drink at some bars and sometimes catch a movie, but besides that it was very chill. We had a hot tub in one of the bedrooms at the house and that blew our minds. I mean, it was a full twelve person hot tub in one of the bedrooms. It was sick.

ES: Do you think the idea of a ’sophomore slump’ effected the way you
approached the new album?

STEVE: Those are just words to me. I think if the first album sold like three million copies, then a definate worry that we can’t exceed that first cd might play into our minds. But, honestly, are first CD did well… but it was small baby steps. The EP did good, then the full length came out and did much better, and now our second album hits and we hope to surpass that one. Just baby steps. You last much longer in this scene this way honestly.

ES: For future tours, what other elements would you like to bring to the
stage to make it more interesting?

STEVE: Now that our new drummer Justin plays to a full click track live, we can play everything you hear on the album at a show. If huge epic orchestra comes in one of the songs, in the past, it just wasnt there. Now everything we do will come into play live. Its so cool cuz we just practived today with all the backing tracks on the new album and the live show just sounds so awsome.

ES: Have you learned any tricks or tips that made recording this album
easier? Or made being in a band easier?

STEVE: No, no tricks of the trade. Just the fact we have been doing this band now for 3 years and we finally now know what we want to do with our music. In the past, we were trying to still figure ourselves out. But now, we came flying through the gates because it all made so much sence now on what we wanted to do on the new album.

ES: Are you planning on swinging by the Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa area
any time soon?

STEVE: We love Canada. Some of our best shows have been there. I cant see why we are not playing there next year. As of now, we have a European/UK tour we have to do, then we are gonna go from there….

ES: If there was one place that you could tour too where would it be?

STEVE: I think the whole band aggrees that would be Japan. We love everything about it. The art. The culture. The people. The food. Everying about it makes us excited.

ES: What are your current music influences if you have any?

STEVE: Man, that would be such a long list. The entire band listens to EVERYTHING. Punk, hardcore, rock, metal, Jazz, Reggae, oldies; you name it, we listen to it. Thats why our band has such a big sound.

ES: What are you listening too right now on your MP3 player?

STEVE: We just did a tour with Eyes Set to Kill and The Urgency, and that band The Urgency gaves us their new album and man, it has not left our cd playing since. That band is gonna be huge one day, just watch!
